For many years now the modern landowners- large-scale producers under the coverage of the government and of justice act with no control. They have created modern galleys, with labour relations equivalent to slavery. The modern helots in Manolada (part of the Peloponnese Area) work in suffocating atmosphere; they pay rent to their exploiters while staying in huts and campsites where there is no water or electricity supply, piled up and unpaid.

Both the government and the local authorities play a key role in the blind violence of the landowners and of their henchmen, in the modern labour galleys been set up in Manolada. Nobody can claim that he/she didn’t know.

Migrant farm workers are located in many areas of the country where the situation is almost the same, no matter that the problems have been made publicly known.

PAME demands all measures to be taken that will ensure legal residence and employment of the migrant workers, equal treatment to the Greek workers, medical coverage, healthy and safe living and working conditions, and their protection from any kind of employers’ terrorism and arbitrariness at their expense.

We specifically demand:

  • All the accrued wages to be paid and the perpetrators of the criminal attacks to be punished.

  • The special residence permit provided for in the Article 44 of the Law 3907/2011, to be given to all the farm workers who demanded their wages (and not only to the 32 who were injured) in Manolada, and in any case of employers’ terrorism and arbitrariness against migrant workers, as a direct measure

  • Residence permits to be given to the migrant farm workers.

  • Daily payment of the wages according to the working hours which cannot exceed the eight-hour limit and which must be reduced in cases of high temperatures, as applied to other sectors.

  • Migrant workers must belong to IKA (Social Security Fund for the private sector employees), since they provide dependent employment and not to OGA (the Social Security Fund for farmers).

  • Decent wages, at least equal to the wage of an unskilled worker.

  • Obligatory provision of at least one day-off per week.

  • Full implementation of the labour legislation to the farm workers and monitoring by the local Labor Inspectorates.

  • Full medical and social security coverage for all.

  • Signing of interstates agreements with all the countries of origin of the migrant workers, so that their social security rights are valid here.

  • Inspection of the workplaces by the occupational doctor, at least once a month.

  • Ensuring that the employers and the state of the provision of adequate and healthy lodgings and their regular inspection by health committees.

  • Care for the children of the farm workers, ensuring free access to nurseries, schools, hospitals and preventive medicine centers for vaccinations etc.
