Statement by Seko Tunnelbanan regarding the strike in Greece on 28 February 2025 with the slogan “their profits or our lives”.

Seko Tunnelbanan, the union that organizes all workers in the Stockholm metro expresses its solidarity with the national 24-hour strike in Greece called for February 28 with the slogan “Their profits or our lives”. We stand in solidarity with the Railway Workers’ Union and PAME, and we wish you the best of luck with the strike.

The strike has been called due to the horrific railway accident at Tempi in northern Greece on February 28, 2023. Two years have passed since the incident, which turned out to be a crime, and which resulted in 57 dead and hundreds injured, mostly young people and railway employees.

Since the incident in February 2023, no one responsible has been held accountable, as both the government and those responsible in private companies are trying to hide the causes of the accident and cover up the facts of the investigation.

Throughout the years, all governments and the EU, regardless of whether they were “conservative or progressive”, have had the motto that profits take precedence over lives. Now is the time for all those responsible to be held accountable for their atrocities.

Similar situations occur in Sweden with the so-called workplace accidents that are nothing more than crimes committed by employers. We see this at construction sites, within the railway and in other workplaces, with at least 150 dead workers in recent years who can never return home to their families.

During 2023 and 2024, there were three railway accidents in Sweden resulting in one death and 15 injuries, as a consequence of unattended train passages, derailments and poor maintenance. Only 13% of railways in the EU are equipped with automatic warning systems on tracks and trains to avoid collisions.

All this is caused by governments, the EU and the increasing number of private contractors/companies within rail transport who invest far too little money in the safety of passengers and employees.

Therefore, together with the working class and youth of Greece, we say, Our LIVES are not a cost!

We support your demands, for instance:

  • To hold all those responsible for the crime in Tempi accountable politically and legally. No cover-up.
  • Strengthen the struggle against the policy of ‘liberalisation’ and privatisation of the EU and the governments. For modern, safe, regular, cheap, exclusively public rail transport.
  • Health and safety measures in all workplaces. Collective labour agreements and fixed daily working hours. Wage increases.

All for one and one for all!
