LAB, class oriented trade union from the Basque Country, condemned the repression by the Greek government against a workers protest in Athens and demand the end of the harassment against the class oriented trade union movement in Greece.
On Friday, January 11, teachers from all over Greece held a massive protest in Athens against the layoffs of thousands of teachers announced by the Greek Government. The Government announced a system for the hiring of teachers in Greek Schools which will layoff thousands of teachers with limited-time contracts. Against this development the class unions of the teachers and teachers committees from all over Greece held a National Strike with a massive demonstration in Athens.

The police blocked the road and attacked the teachers’ demonstration with tear gas and flash-grenades into the crowd. As a result of the attack one comrade of the Trade Union PAME was injured in the head, and one MP of the Communist Party of Greece, was injured and hospitalized.

LAB denounces the attack against workers. The only crime of these teachers is fight for their rights, jobs and future. The government has to guarantee life and jobs with dignity and not condemn the workers to precariousness job and life conditions and attack with violence one workers demonstration.

LAB salutes the national Strike on Monday, January 14 and calls the Greek workers to support the strike and the mobilizations for the workers rights
