ANNOUNCEMENT
October 4
Day of Solidarity with the People of Pakistan
The tragedy that struck the people of Pakistan can not leave the Greek People untouched.
Floods in Pakistan was a “pre- announced” tragedy and a product of capitalist development, of a system that serves the interests of the small minority of the plutocrats and their imperialist patrons. The floods were another crushing blow to 170 million people, where more than one third lived before the flood, in conditions of absolute poverty.
Today the victims exceed 20 million, representing 12% of the population, the 4.6 million of them are homeless. The death toll exceeds 1.600 according to official statements by the Pakistani government.
About six million people, 3.5 million of them children, are at risk of deadly diseases linked to contaminated water such as cholera and dysentery, hepatitis A and E and typhoid fever. Hunger is another immediate threat to the affected .
The anger of victims is growing and overflowing since they are treated like animals. Packets of food are thrown at them as if they are dogs. People are forced to give battle to have a package.
Facing this situation PAME is not limited to messages of solidarity to the people of Pakistan, but also takes initiatives in order for our workers and people to express their solidarity in practical ways.
The Executive Secretariat has decided to set October 4, 2010 as the day of solidarity with the people of Pakistan.
After contacting the trade unions of Pakistan, we know that apart from money, the basic material needs are water – oil-sugar – milk powder.
At a time when the people of our country experiences the consequences of capitalist development and struggles against policies that turn workers and the other popular strata in modern slaves for the benefit of monopolies and having sour experience from the solidarity of the imperialists and various humanitarian – NGOs etc. organizations, PAME calls upon the trade unions, the bodies of tradesmen and poor farmers, women´s and youth organisations, the workers’ to contribute to the day of solidarity with the people of Pakistan.
