Police Attacked Against Workers Protest And Arrested 3 Trade Unionists (VIDEO)

On Thursday, October 26, at the city of Ioannina, the Regional Trade Union Center, affiliate of PAME, staged a protest outside a Super Market, demanding no worker to be laid off.

Police forces, after the call of the Super Marker managers, demanded the workers to stop their protest and leave. When the Union refused the riot police forces attacked. The workers formed picket lines and defended their protest. The police used stun – grenades against the workers who defended their rights.

After failing to stop the protest the police arrested the President of the Regional Trade Union Center of Ioannina, Member of PAME National Committee, comrade Nikos Exarhos. The police also arrested comrades Fanis Katsios, Board Member of the Regional TU of Ioannina, and Thanasis Nakos, President of Construction Workers Union of Ioannina.

The workers of the city of Ioannina immediately organized a massive rally at the police Station where the unionists were transferred, till the arrested unionists were released.

This is another example of the escalation of the anti-workers policies of the SYRIZA Government, which aims to attack the functioning of the trade unions and ban the workers’ right to strike and fight for their rights.

We call all unions to condemn these practices and express their solidarity with the Regional Trade Union of Ioannina. (emails at [email protected] )
