On Thursday, February 21, workers of Municipalities held a National Strike and Demonstrations all over Greece.

Main demand of the strike was the protection of the benefit to municipality workers for Dangerous and Unhealthy Work, a benefit that the Government wants to abolish. It is in this sector where the workers have suffered dozens of “work accidents” with more than 50 workers killed in the workplaces the last years.

The Government tried to block the demonstration with the use of Riot Police, however, the workers and the Unions held a symbolic Occupation of the Ministry of Finance.

The Deputy Minister of Finance responded to the workers’ representatives that the measures for the abolition of the benefit will be postponed.

The Unions rallying with PAME stated that this development highlights the need to escalate the struggle for the extension of the benefit to more sectors, not its abolishment.
