With authoritarianism and repression were faced unemployed people and workers by the coalition government (ND- PASOK), while they were demonstrating against unemployment in the centre of Athens, on Thursday, March 6.
The demonstration was organized by trade unions of PAME (All Workers Militant Front), Unemployment Committees, also participated Peoples’ Committees and the Coordinating Struggle Committee of people with disabilities.
The protesters gathered in Omonoia Square, in the centre of Athens, and marched to the Ministry of Labour. They found the doors closed, even though a meeting had been scheduled. The unions demanded that the minister must come in order to carry out the meeting. As this did not happen they announced that they would go to the Ministry of Finance to meet a representative of the government.
Nevertheless, heavy police forces and police vans had blocked the road in order to prevent the protesters and later on they attacked them with batons and tear gas. The Greek government had provocatively banned demonstrations during the visit of the German President in Greece.
The class oriented trade unions condemned the government (ND – PASOK) for the unprovoked attack of the police forces on their mobilization, and stated that they will continue to struggle and demand relief measures for the unemployed people and their families.
