On Tuesday February 23 students all over Greece held militant protests against the state violence and repression that took place in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on Monday.
The students demand the opening of the Universities which have been closed the last year. Under the pretext of the pandemic, the Greek Government imposed a series of changes to Public Universities, transforming Public Education into a commodity and at the same time attacking freedoms and rights of the students with the imposition of Police inside the Universities.
Thousands of students demonstrated in Thessaloniki, outside the courthouse demanding the release of the arrested students. After many hours those arrested during the violent police attack were temporarily released pending trial on Thursday February 25. The 29 of them are facing charges of damaging public property, while at least one student, member of the Student Association Board, is accused of disobedience, resistance against the police and disturbing the common peace. The lawyers of the students denounced the police brutality and the police process that denied the arrested and injured students even to be examined by doctors for many hours.
The students’ protest in Thessaloniki was warmly welcomed by the Healthcare workers who were on strike at the same time. Video https://youtu.be/dj5qnplAO8k
