The Workers of the Marinopoulos (former Carrefour) made an important step in the organization of their struggle. With meetings that took place inside the supermarkets, the workers discussed the developments and decided to take the situation in their own hands. With the support of 4 sector unions (of Athens, Piraeus, West Attica and Lavrio) and the Marinopoulos Union of North Greece, they decided to call for a strike on July 22.
The Marinopoulos Supermarker that employs more than 12.000 workers all over Greece applied for bankruptcy procedures, leaving the workers unpaid and in uncertainty! Ally to the owner are trade unionists, who call the workers to wait, not to fight and give time to the owner. They openly try to sabotage the strike.
However the Workers’ Committees that were formed during the meetings decided:
“No more waiting, No more fear, No more illusions! We have to raise the pressure to the employer and the Government. To demand protection of all jobs. No worker to be laid off! No coerced resignations or “voluntary” redundancies. Payment of the salaries and allowances the employer owes to the workers. We strike on July 22”
