The CGTP-IN, on behalf of the Portuguese workers, warmly salutes the Greek workers and trade unions who, on 9 April, are mobilising for a national general strike in defence of their rights, wages and living conditions.

The situation facing Greek workers is a reflection of the policies of austerity and exploitation that continue to penalise workers and their families. The Greek government has decided to maintain a policy of responding to the interests of the big economic groups, capital and their astronomical profits, while failing to respond to the problems and concerns of the workers. A policy that is based on the neoliberal guidelines of the European Union and that attacks workers’ rights and incomes in several countries, now supporting a new wave of attacks on rights on the pretext of the arms race. The deterioration of wages, the rise in the cost of living and job insecurity are problems that transcend borders and require the solidarity of all workers.

We are sure that Greek workers will give a powerful response in this general strike.

The CGTP-IN expresses its support for the just demands of Greek workers for wage increases, collective bargaining, the demand for effective measures against inflation and speculation in the prices of essential goods, in defence of decent and affordable housing for all.

The Greek workers’ struggle is an example of courage and determination in defence of a fairer and more equal society. The CGTP-IN reaffirms its solidarity with this struggle and calls for the unity of all workers, in Portugal, Greece and around the world, against policies that put profits before people.
