Artists Continue and escalate their Struggle

On February 15, once again, artists, artists’ unions, students of art schools, and universities were on the street demanding the withdrawal of the Presidential Decree 85/22 and the government amendment, which degrades and privatizes art education and abolishes artists’ working rights. At the same time artists’ unions demand for a substantial upgrading of art schools and Collective Labour Agreements in every workplace.

The students and the National Union of Musicians rallied next to the striking teachers under the slogan “Education, Health, Culture, the people take to the streets” loudly over and over again.

Students of the Higher Arts Departments, students of the School of Fine Arts which is under occupation, students of the Theatre and Music Departments of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens were also on their side.

The massive demonstration reached the Parliament were was blocked by Police forces. But under the clear stance of the artists the mobilization continued.

Characteristic of the great recognition that the struggle of the artists has won, after 2 months is the applause throughout the march from passers-by, proving in this way that culture is a need of the people and not a luxury for a few.

The artists unions continue their initiatives with new National Strike on Friday, February 17 and a new big concert on Monday, February 20 in Athens
