The All Workers Militant Front (PAME), which hundreds of private and public sector trade unions in Greece are affiliated with, expresses its class solidarity with and salutes transport workers in the Netherlands and their trade unions for their 24-hour nationwide strike on 9 September against planned cuts to social security.

Your struggle to defend protections for the unemployed and social security concerns all workers. Social security is a right won through hard-fought struggles. We refuse to see it sacrificed in the name of competitiveness and the profits of business groups.

Transport workers know only too well what exhausting hours, shift work, intensified workloads and daily responsibility for the safety of thousands of people mean. They need wages and pensions that meet their needs, and working hours and conditions that protect their health and lives.

In Greece, workers in public transport, the railways and ports are fighting for collective bargaining agreements with pay rises, shorter working hours, adequate staffing, health and safety measures, and modern, safe, affordable, fully public transport, free from the drive for profit. They oppose the policy of putting profit first, which treats the needs and safety of workers and passengers as a cost and led to the railway crime at Tempi.

The fight for our social and labour rights is linked to the struggle against imperialist war. We reject cuts to wages, healthcare, education and social security while governments channel vast resources into the war economy and the wars of the US, NATO and the EU.

In this spirit, the international mobilisation of dockworkers on 6 February 2026, involving trade unions from seven countries and 35 ports across Europe and the Mediterranean, demonstrated the strength of a united class struggle. The next International Day of Action on 30 October 2026 continues this effort, opposing the transformation of ports into infrastructure for war and defending jobs, pay rises, and safe working conditions.

Your own struggle also highlights the need to strengthen solidarity, class struggle and joint action by transport workers across borders. When workers organise and fight, confronting the anti-people policies of capital and governments, they can demand the life they deserve.
