The Greek Committee for International Detente and Peace (EEDYE) calls on the people and the youth to give a massive, militant “presence” to the nation-wide Two-Day Anti-Imperialist Action on May 16 and 17 and to the 43rd Marathon Peace March in Attica. The first Marathon March was held in 1963, by the vice-president of EEDYE, medical doctor, Balkan athletics winner and National Resistance fighter Grigoris Lambrakis and his companions. It is living proof that nothing can stop a people, when the peoples decide to resist, to organize and to claim their lives, against powerful opponents.

We are marching on the Marathon Peace March, because we refuse to accept as normality the barbarity of wars for the profits of the few, we refuse to watch silently as our country is transformed into a war base, as schools and hospitals are razed, as entire cities are destroyed, as genocides are committed on live broadcast, as millions of people are uprooted from their homeland. The most armed conflicts have been ongoing worldwide since the end of the Second World War.

We refuse new bloody sacrifices of our people, so that exorbitant amounts are allocated to the imperialists’ war armaments, for weapons of mass destruction, which bring the holocaust closer to humanity than ever. We strengthen the struggle for the disengagement of our country from the gangster attacks of the USA – Israel on other peoples, for the disengagement from the imperialist plans of NATO and the EU.

We walk the path of great struggles, honoring the history of the EEDYE, the peace movement in our country, the fighters who even gave their lives for a world without imperialist wars. We are marching on the Marathon Peace March to stop the genocide, to end the occupation and to obtain the free and independent state of the Palestinian people.

We are marching on the Marathon Peace March for the people of Cuba who live as a modern besieged country because they insist on choosing their own path against the war hawks in the USA and the pursuits of their monopolies. Because for 65 years they have not surrendered, while they are in the mouth of the wolf. Solidarity with the Cuban people is the responsibility of all peoples who resist.

We are marching on the Marathon Peace March to condemn the imperialist war that continues for the 4th year in Ukraine, with tragic consequences for the brotherly peoples of Ukraine and Russia who lived and created together and together crushed the monster of Nazism. The Greek government, in full alignment with the strategy of the US, NATO and the EU, with the agreement of all parties of Euro-Atlanticism, is sending Greek military forces to Saudi Arabia, Greek frigates to foreign seas to guard the refineries and the profits of the ship-owners, transforming the entire country, from Souda, to Larissa and Alexandroupolis, into a vast US-NATO ’’aircraft carrier’’, granting bases, ports, airports, for their military operations.

This policy puts our people in mortal danger. The country is becoming a target of retaliation, while the people are called upon to pay the cost through enormous armaments expenditures, cuts in social needs. We are marching on the Marathon Peace March, because we will never tolerate acquiring a “coffin culture”, getting used to seeing our children in coffins with the EU and NATO flags, so that the oil bosses, ship-owners, arms dealers and their governments can fill their pockets.

We are marching on the Marathon Peace March because we have a common interest with all peoples, to claim a world without wars and exploitation.

EVERYONE TO THE 43rd MARATHON PEACE MARCH ON SUNDAY, MAY 17 The start will be at 8 a.m. from the Marathon Tomb and the finish at 8 p.m. at Syntagma Square, where a large gathering and rally will take place, with a march from the Ministry of National Defense.
