February 28 National General Strike in Greece

Published on

We are only hours before Friday February 28, day of the National General strike in Greece. Under the slogan “Their profits or our lives”, the strike will, by all indications, have unprecedented participation, with factories, construction sites, shops, schools, universities, offices and services, even theatres and entertainment venues going “dead”.

February 28 marks 2 years since the crime in Tempe, the train crash that killed 57 people, majority of them young students.

The militant unions are feverishly preparing the participation of workers in the mobilization. The aim of the unions is for both the strike and the rallies to be a milestone in the uprising of the people and the youth against the policy responsible for the crime in Tempe, against the attempt to cover up the guilty parties and the causes, against the sacrifice of safety, health and life on the altar of profit.

Despite the attempts to undermine the strike by the leading groups of the unions controlled by employers’ – government, the affiliates of ETUC in Greece, and despite the attempts of disorientation, the success of the strike is being carried out by hundreds of trade unions all over the country, targeting the policy that, by supporting the profitability of big business, constantly causes new crimes sacrificing the safety, health and life of workers and the people.

With more than 90 strike rallies across the country, workers and their unions, industrial farmers who have been fighting for a month to survive in the blockades, self-employed, youth, will meet in the streets of the struggle.

Many protests have been planned in solidarity in many cities around the world
