In a spirit of companionship and solidarity, the Friendship event and the basketball match between teams from Greece and Serbia took place on Saturday 28 September in Pefkohori, Halkidiki, near Thessaloniki
The game was co-organized by PAME and the Serbian Trade Union SLOGA, in the context of the Balkan Workers’ Friendship and Solidarity Initiatives, the 20th anniversary of USA-NATO imperialist intervention in Yugoslavia and the 20th anniversary of the foundation of PAME. An event followed, with the two teams awarded, while the PAME delegation exchanged commemorative gifts with SLOGA.
On behalf of the PAME Executive Secretariat, George Perros addressed a short address in which he thanked SLOGA for its solidarity and support for the struggles of Greek workers. He emphasized the joy of this initiative, as it is being celebrated on the 20th anniversary of the founding of PAME, an anniversary that coincided with the brutal murderous USA-NATO imperialist intervention in Yugoslavia.
“In those difficult times,” he said, the Greek people, Greece’s militant unions, stood by the people of Yugoslavia. PAME’s first international mission was on the bridges of Yugoslavia alongside our brothers. This internationalist PAME solidarity is an important heritage for the workers and the movement of Greece and your country. “
- Perros referred to the importance of solidarity and the common action and struggles of workers of all countries against the common enemy, the business groups that exploit workers, the anti-workers governments, and the corrupt unions controlled by the government and the employers. But especially imperialism that murders and creates poverty and refugees.
“But we have a powerful weapon,” he said. “With friendship and solidarity to strengthen the common struggle for a world without poverty, unemployment and imperialist wars. For a world without exploitation. To have the opportunity to live better. Long live SLOGA! Long live PAME! Long live the working class of Greece and Serbia! “
After the event, a meeting was held between the delegations of PAME Executive Secretariat, and the leadership of SLOGA trade union, where they discussed the working conditions of each country’s working class and the critical forthcoming strike of 2 October in Greece.
The basketball game ended with the Serbs comfortably dominating, but both teams received the applause of the people.
