PAME, representing the class trade-union movement of Greece, as an act of internationalist solidarity and sincere support to the people of India and South-eastern Asia victims of the Tsunami, has collect the amount of 15.000 (fifteen thousand) Euros from greek workers.
At the same time, the Greek Federation of Women collected for the same aim the sum of 2.500 (two thousand and five hundred) Euros.
On Monday 21 March 2005, in a Special Ceremony of Internationalist Solidarity, this money was given to H. Mahadevan, General Secretary of Trade union Tamilnadu AITUC and head of WFTU Regional Office Asia-Pacific, who has been invited and came to Athens for two days.
In his speech colleague H. Mahadevan has explained that he is at the head of a campaign to build and equipped a Hospital in the regions of Nagappattanam, Cuddallore and Kanyakumari, to help and offer a relief to the workers who suffer from the consequences of destruction caused by Tsunami and he expressed the gratitude of workers of his country but also of the wider region for the help sent by their Greek colleagues.
Τens of trade unionists representin the class Trade unions of Athens and representatives of mass institutions have participated to this Event of PAME expressing their deep and sincere solidarity.
The reresentatives of PAME underline the fact that this money comes from poor working families who gave it with enthusiasm and spontaneously hoping, via the class trade unions of the region, to reach the people of South-eastern Asia who really needs it. Very significan was the contribution of Greek construction workers, youth and women.
The Ceremony has ended keeping one minute silence for the dead workers in the tragedy in South-eastern Asia.
The total sum of 17.500 (seventeen thousand and five hundred) Euros we hope to ease even for a little the victims of Tsunami.
