Dockworkers do not work for war

No sacrifice for profits – No involvement in the imperialists’ war

This was the message sent on Friday, February 6, by the massive general strike in Piraeus and West Attica. A struggle that gave a clear answer to the criminal policy that turns workplaces into arenas of death, into special economic zones for war preparation, dragging entire regions into the vortex of imperialist rivalries, with incalculable consequences for workers.

A tough class confrontation, waged through decisions and coordination by the Regional Unions of Piraeus and West Attica and dozens of unions from both the private and public sectors. In this context, large and strategic workplaces, such as ports, shipyards, refineries, and factories, were brought to a standstill, and thousands of strikers, together with the youth, made their presence felt at the strike rallies in Piraeus and Elefsina.

In Piraeus, with the massive participation of thousands of strikers, from the “economic nerve” of the port, shipping companies, retail stores, food and catering, offices, schools, and hospitals, the rally was held at Municipal Theatre Square. There, “like a clenched fist,” the strikers, joined by large numbers of youth, even self-employed people of the city, and women from working-class and popular strata, gave a militant response to the exploiters who set fire to the lives of workers and all peoples. Militantly, behind the banners of their unions, the workers of Piraeus demonstrated that they will not die for the profits of capitalists, nor become cogs in the cannons of war.

In Elefsina, “No tolerance for the transformation of Western Attica into a hub of involvement and a special economic zone!”, this was the message sent by unions and mass organizations that demonstrated in Elefsina as part of the strike in West Attica. Many workers from the major workplaces of the area took part, while during the rally a one-minute silence was observed for the victims of employer crimes, followed immediately by the powerful chant: “We have carried coffins too many times, from workplaces, floods, and fires.”

A breath of optimism comes from the fact that this strike battle took place simultaneously with the International Day of Action of dockworkers in six countries Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey, France, and Morocco, which in turn constitutes a resounding internationalist message from dockworkers in 20 ports, under the banner slogan: “Dockworkers do not work for war.”
