The SYRIZA Government escalates oppression against the workers’ and peoples movement with violent attacks and arrests of militants. Yesterday, November 29, workers’ strikes and protests were attacked in 3 different areas.
At the city of Ioannina, during strike at Super Markets-where the workers demanded their wages- as a servant of the employers, the Government sent riot police to attack the picket lines of the workers. The police with a violent attack arrested 12 workers and unionists, among them the President of the Regional Trade Union Center of Ioannina, and member of the National Committee of PAME.
In Athens, during a protest of workers and Students Militant Front (MAS) at the Ministry of Education against the stopping of free food for University Students, the Minister hide behind riot police and refused to meet the protesters. When the students demanded to enter the Ministry they were attacked with riot police and tear gas.
At the Central Court House of Athens, during a protest of Unions and peoples’ Committees against the auctioning off of people’s houses, because of debts to the banks, the police attacked again with tear gas, within the Court building
These incidents are an escalation of violent oppression and intimidations by the Government of SYRIZA against the workers and the class trade union movement. The Government is planning to ban the right of the workers to go on Strike and also abolish basic rights of the workers to organize in unions and fight collectively.
Against these developments PAME has called the unions to organize National General Strike on December 14.
